I was introduced to wood working at a very young age. By the time I was 10 years old, I would spend much of my time at the local Boy’s & Girls Club in the woodshop. I began to take shop classes in the 7th grade at school. This was about the time my father started saving scraps of wood and allowed me to spend hours playing around with his Atlas 912 Band Saw. In high school I continued to take wood shop with the addition of metal shop.
I went on to become a Bricklayer/Stone mason and have not worked with wood much in recent years. About 4-years ago my parents moved up to Oregon. And Dad left behind the Atlas Band Saw for me and his Boice Crane 2500 for my brother.
The band saw sat collecting dust for about two years, then I used it to help my brothers boys make their pine wood derby cars. Back in the corner it went. This year, I helped then again… but decided it was time to tune up the old Atlas. My father told me about this web site where I found the forums and became hooked.
Before I knew it I was calling my brother to offer and buy him a smaller saw like he wanted for the BC 2500. He accepted as he did not have a 220 outlet anyways, and could not be bothered to add one.
Over the past few months I have acquired a lot more tools and am now near a complete work shop. But now I find myself trying to swap many of them out for older models. I was warned that this is a slipper slope, and everyone was right.
Hopefully soon I will be making saw dust and wood chips ;) |
